Definition : Word that describes the noun(person, animal, place or a thing) or pronoun (He, she, it etc) of a sentence is called Describing words or Adjective.Basically they modify subject or object and add more details, information or specifics to them which make the sentence lot more interesting.

An adjective is a word that describes a noun (a person, place, or thing) or a pronoun. Think of adjectives as the "describing words" that add detail and make your sentences more interesting. They answer questions like:

Why Describing words are required?

Describing words or Adjectives are important structure of a sentence which add more information. They describes the colour, size, quantity, shape, look, mood, quality, emotion, state of the noun, pronoun, subject, object in a sentence. Generally they answers "What kind of" questions generated in a curious mind. When we explains or write about something (thing, place), someone (person or animals, we need help of adjectives and describing words to make our stance more specific, more interesting and provide visualization to our audiance, readers or listeners.

Describing words or Adjectives with Examples

Let's understand the describing words with examples to clear the concept.

Example: I have two ballons. In this sentence "two" is a describing word which quantifies the noun "ballon".

Blue butterfly. Here "Blue" is a describing word which describes the colour of noun "butterfly".

Big elephant. Here "Big" is a describing word which describes the size of noun "elephant".

Adjectives of Quality (Descriptive Adjectives)

These adjectives describe the quality or characteristic of a noun. They tell you what kind of person, place, or thing it is.

Adjectives of Quantity or Number

These adjectives tell you how much or how many of something there is.Adjectives of Quantity are used for nouns you can't count.

Note:Cardinal numbers (like one, two, three) and ordinal numbers (like first, second, third) are also adjectives of number. For example, "The first prize was a trophy."

Demonstrative Adjectives

These adjectives point out a specific noun. They answer the question "Which one?".

Example 1: This (for a singular noun close by)

Possessive Adjectives

These adjectives show possession or ownership. They tell you who something belongs to.
