Articles are words in English Grammer which are used to indicate something is specific (Known to the speaker/Reader or Listner)or Not Specific (Identity is Not Known or very General).

In above example, both speaker and listner are knowing the particular Pen they are talking about and that cannot be anything else.
Indefinite Article Example:
- Give me a Pen
In above example, speaker is asking about any random Pen which is not specific.
- Give me an Apple
In above example, speaker is asking about any Apple from the basket which is not specific.

Use "the", if the specific identity is known to the speaker and listner.
Use "the", if we refer something or someone which/who is unique.
